The alternative media has been left with a little egg on our faces after reports surfaced over the weekend that Harry Reid teamed up with the Chinese government to oust besieged Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy from the land his family used to graze cattle on for the last 140 years to make way for solar panel power stations.
Reid and his oldest son, Rory, were both involved in an effort by a Chinese energy giant, ENN Energy Group, to build a $5 billion solar farm and panel manufacturing plant in the southern Nevada desert back in 2012.
Roy, a lawyer with a prominent Las Vegas firm that was representing ENN, helped it locate a 9,000-acre desert site that it was to buy from Clark County, where he formerly chaired the county commission.
After careful investigation however, it now appears that the project was shelved last year after ENN Mojave Energy LLC was unable to secure the needed agreements with utility companies to sell the power the solar farm would generate.
Here’s a release from Clark County:
ENN Mojave Energy representatives informed the County today that they could not obtain “power purchase agreements” (PPAs) with utility companies within necessary contract deadlines, thus triggering an automatic termination of an agreement to create a solar power generation, manufacturing and research facility on 9,000 acres in southern Clark County.
“ENN is grateful for the assistance that the County has provided in its efforts to bring the project envisioned by the Agreement to fruition,” ENN Senior Vice President Tim Carlson wrote in a letter to the County. “Chairman [Steve] Sisolak’s efforts to provide economic development to the Laughlin area were a constant as ENN attempted to move this project to the development stage. Unfortunately, the market will not support a project of this scale and nature at this time.”
County officials said the agreement was aggressive in its timetable due to the County’s desire to quickly initiate economic development benefitting Laughlin. Under the terms of the option/purchase agreement with the County, ENN needed to obtain sufficient PPAs in order to exercise the option to purchase Phase 1 of their project’s land in Laughlin, about 90 miles south of Las Vegas. The PPAs had to be secured by this month, according to the agreement approved by the County Commission in December 2011, and automatically terminated Thursday.
County staff will provide a report to the County Commission at its meeting July 2 about moving forward with the economic development of the 9,000 acres. “Economic development and job creation must remain our focus,” Sisolak said. “I am grateful that ENN spent a lot of time and effort to move its project forward. I know they did what they could.”
After being applauded by the nation for perpetuating the BLM stand down, the story was the most viewed article on the ENTIRE internet over the weekend after the Infowars version was picked up and carried by the drudge report. As far as well can tell however, it looks like conservative columnist and radio show host Dana Loesch was first to make the connection.
Apparently few actually took the time to actually look on the official Clark County government website for details. We didn’t. Our article on the matter got tens of thousands of views and over a thousand shares. Our Bad!
Its also important to point out that the Reid, ENN solar farm was ear marked for the Laughlin, NV area which is south of Las Vegas. The Bundy ranch is North East of Vegas.
Energy interests still to blame
It appears that energy interests did have something to do with the Bundy Ranch siege after all, however. Just weeks ago, The BLM cashed in with $1.27 million in oil and gas leases in Nevada. 29 to be exact, by six different companies.
And you guessed it. Some are on or around the disputed Bundy grazing area.
Reported by ShaleReporter.com:
U.S. Bureau of Land Management geologist Lorenzo Trimble tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal the Elko County oil and gas leases sold Tuesday for $1.27 million to six different companies. The auction took place in Reno. The leases are near where Houston-based Noble Energy Inc. wants to drill for oil and natural gas on 40,000 acres of public and private land near the town of Wells. The Review-Journal reports the project would be the first in Nevada to use hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, to extract oil and gas from shale deposits.
This document from the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology shows significant exploratory drilling being conducted in precisely the same area where the Bundy families cattle are grazing. This is in the “Gold Butte” area. It is indicated on the lower right corner of the map below, which clearly shows that numerous exploratory drilling operations are being conducted there.
What’s also clear is that oil has been found in nearby areas and possibly even within the Gold Butte area itself.
Here’s the map showing the oil exploration conducted on the land where Bundy runs his cattle. (Red crosshairs are exploratory oil and gas drilling operations):
So, does this make Harry Reid any less of a political sham beholden to special interests? NO! Does the government really give a crap about desert tortoises they themselves are killing hundreds of? NO! Did energy interests have anything to do with the Bundy Ranch siege? YES! Just oil and gas and not solar.
OK, we all learned something.
